Citing Instagram is very similar to other content. You need to include the who, when, what, and where aspects of the Instagram photo or video.  See below and the APA Style Blog post on How to Cite Instagram in APA Style for more information.

Citing an Instagram Photo or Video

Reference

General Format:

LastName, FirstInitial, MiddleInitial. [@Instagram username]. (Year, Month Day). Title/Caption of photo [Instagram photo]. Retrieved from URL of post

PageName. [@Instagram username]. (Year, Month Day). Title/Caption of video [Instagram video]. Retrieved from URL of post

For Example(don't forget to indent the second and subsequent lines):

Fox, M. J. [@realmikejfox]. (2018, June 5). It takes < than a min to learn how to save a life. Watch the video at handsonly.nyc #ICanSaveALife with #HandsOnlyCPR [Instagram photo]. Retrieved from https://www.instagram.com/p/BjppDLDBxRF/

EarthPix. [@earthpix]. (2019, January 8). Snow train ride in Lago Bianco Switzerland 🇨🇭 by @yingxingdelia [Instagram video]. Retrieved from https://www.instagram.com/p/BsY81cZlVLJ/

In-Text Citation

General Format:

(LastName, Year)

(PageName, Year)

For Example:

(Fox, 2018)

(EarthPix, 2019)

Citing an Instagram Profile

Reference

General Format:

LastName, FirstInitial. MiddleInitial. [@Instagram username]. (n.d.). Posts [Instagram profile]. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL of profile

PageName. [@Instagram username]. (n.d.). Posts [Instagram profile]. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL of profile

For Example:

Shapiro Library. [@snhulibrary]. (n.d.). Posts [Instagram profile]. Retrieved January 23, 2019 from https://www.instagram.com/snhulibrary/

Hamill, M. [@hamillhimself]. (n.d.). Posts [Instagram profile]. Retrieved January 23, 2019 from https://www.instagram.com/hamillhimself/

NOTE: If you are going to cite IGTV, Tagged, Followers, or Following use those titles instead of Posts. For example, if you wanted to cite Robert Downey Jr.'s IGTV use this format:

Downey, R., Jr. [@robertdowneyjr]. (n.d.). IGTV [Instagram profile]. Retrieved January 23, 2019 from https://www.instagram.com/robertdowneyjr/channel/

In-Text Citation

General Format:

(LastName, n.d)

(PageName, n.d.)

For Example:

(Downey, n.d.)

(Shapiro Library, n.d.)
