Equitable access to websites and digital content for users with cognitive or physical disabilities, whether temporary or permanent, is increasingly recognized as an important obligation of academic libraries. It is important to be aware of the types of accessibility concerns and how to address them, when possible before they impede our users’ journey. Library systems are often complex and contain large numbers of documents created through different digitization and publication workflows, presenting potential barriers for users with disabilities. Shapiro Library is committed to providing all SNHU students, faculty, and staff equitable access to the library resources and services they require for academic and research needs.
The Shapiro Library has several ongoing efforts to increase the accessibility of our systems and resources. We have created best practices that are reviewed and updated frequently to prevent accessibility issues on our website. We also have EIT agreements with our vendors to make sure we are subscribing to resources that provide equitable access, and communication protocols to address individual resource issues as needed. Still, Shapiro Library’s collections are large and what makes a resource accessible is unique to each reader.
